Why do People Get Addicted to Auctions?

When we speak about addiction we tend to think of drugs, alcohol, and gambling.

With the advent of technology and the internet we are now finding new forms of addiction; one of which is an addiction to on line auctions.

What is addiction? What triggers addiction? Why factors cause an individual to become addicted?

Addiction can be thought of as a form of “compulsion” or an urge to repeat a behaviour in spite of any negative consequences.

The causes? Some say it is a personality trait, that there is an addiction-prone personality, others say that it also depends on the kind of activity that is engage in. Almost anything that is pleasureable can become addictive.

Take for instance the case of auctions, or online auctions to be particular. Who would have thought that this very rewarding activity can also become addictive? Are auctions really addictive?

Auctions are so popular because people can find the rarest, the cheapest, and the most extraordinary items at an affordable price.

Every day millions of people participate in auctions. A very small proportion of these participants exhibit compulsive behaviour; once started they cannot stop bidding.

A person can be labeled an addict if he considers the activity as the most significant part of his life. An addict will become irritated if their activity is limited or controlled.

What factors trigger an addiction to auctions.

1. Euphoric effect

Auctions give people a chance to make their name known or recognized in a densely populated area. The feeling of being recognized and having control can trigger addiction.

2. Avoidance or relief from day to day problems.

Some people find auctions allow them to release their tensions and avoid unpleasant things.

3. Creates a “high”

Auctions can be addictive because the bidding process creates an air of competition. Each time you bid you get a feeling of superiority that can be so intense that you want to have more.

The actual process of bidding and striving to outdo the other bidders, tends to create fierce competition.

Auctions can be very addictive. For most people it is a safe and harmless way to have some fun, make some money, or aquire a bargain. The problem arises if you can no longer control the urge, when all other activity comes second to the auction you are participating in. If you can stay away from your screen for a couple of days without feeling depressed or ittitated - you do not have a problem.
