How to Create Your Own Successful Auction Site

Everyone loves eBay. This is the benchmark of what a good auction site should be. An auction site is not impossible to set up, but the idea of trying to compete with eBay will put most people off. But there is no harm in trying. It is still possible to create an awesome auction site. Here are some of the tips:

1. Great things start from small beginnings.

In putting up an auction site, do not be too ambitious right away. It is alright so start small, to take things one step at a time. You won't pull off an eBay miracle immediately - remember that eBay used to be a struggling site before it became the giant that it is now.

The first sensible step is to look for a niche and make an auction site that is targeted to that niche. Once that it is done, it is easier to branch out to other marketing areas. Finding your niche will cut down the competition, and increase your chances to make it big.

Once the website is up, you must work hard to make it popular. As soon as it becomes popular, then that's the time when one can go for more categories.

2. Creating the auction site is easier than you think.

Register your dot com domain name first. Once the domain is selected, a web host must be chosen right away.

The web space must have at least 5000 megabytes to allow for enough images and information.

After that, it is time to look for a script to operate the auctioneering. The script will be the foundation of the auction system. Spend some time at sites like CGI Resource Index which are overflowing with these scripts.

Install the script on your web host and test it out.

Once you have tested that the script works - test it again - get some friends to test it. If you leave out this step it will lead to embarassment later and may even kill your new business before it gets off the ground.

3. Promotion, promotion, promotion!

Submit to as many search engines as you can. Many search engines allow free submission so no money is required to start off. You must to get your auction site listed with the top search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN.

Other than search engines, you must also link the site to other websites related to what is being auctioned off.

4. Reports are necessary.

You must come up with a systematic listing schedule and reliable database to check the auctions on a regular basis. Keeping track of the business is important if you are to be successful. Back up your files and database automatically onto a different server on at least a daily basis. If is bad enought if your server goes down - but will be a disaster if you can't resore you auction site when the server is working again.

5. Inventory management is the key.

Keeping track of the auction items is important as prevents unnecessary problems and unsatisfied customers.

6. Find out an apt shipping schedule.

One must inform the buyers the shipping facts - when, how, how much?

7. An accountant can make things easier.

If you can afford to hire an accountant, do so to help manage the earnings and other financial and business matters. This will make the business more efficient.

An auction site is a thing of wonder, and it is apparent on how eBay has stolen the show in the www arena. If you believe in yourself you may be able to create the same wonder...who knows?
